Comic Book Hipsters Be Da[r]ned!

Howdy there! ... It's been a while. I've been trying to think of ways to find time to blog between my bouts of studying, work, social life, and procrastination. I'm thinking of posting once a week? I'll continue to figure it out. It the meantime, I'm feeling kinda like this guy:

Anywhoo, the main reason for my visit to the blogosphere on this day, is another random (potentially uninteresting) idea that ventured into my mind:

Just now, as I was walking across campus, I happened to see a sculpture of Icarus. Though in my sleep-deprivation-caused-by-studying-and-attempting-to-fuel-myself-with-Mountain-Dew state, I misread the plaque as "Galactus." Who, for those of you who don't know, is one of the most awesome comic book villains (though his villain status is debatable) in existence.

I'm so hungry I could eat a planet. Seriously.
It got me thinking - It's been said that comic books and superheroes are the modern equivalent of mythology. If that's so, since Icarus (and numerous other mythological characters) have their own statues today, does that mean 1000 years from now, people will be walking through museums looking at statues of Spider-Man, Captain America, Batman, Superman, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, etc? I certainly hope so.

I love that superheroes are becoming more "mainstream." (Sorry, comic book hipsters.) And I honestly hope to see them be the subjects of "serious" art in the near future. ... Though, it won't be me putting them into said art, due to lack of artistic ability. :/

19 March 2013

So I had a couple different ideas for today's post. Then I ran out of time to write them. :/ I wasted time after getting home from work, and now I am about to head out for the evening, so I don't have much to contribute to the blogosphere today.

One thing I will note, my random word when I have nothing to say is "narwhal." Don't ask me why. Perhaps because they are random creatures. For my sister, the word is "box." For a friend of mine, it is "purple monkey schizophrenics." (I think she wins most creative.) For Mary Poppins, the word is "supercalifragilisitcexpialidocious." (Yes, I know how to spell that, no I did not have to look it up. :P )

Anyone else out there have a random word to fill the silence?

In the meantime, enjoy this pointless video - (Rated PG for mild language).

I'll take a Big Mac, large fries, and a Harlem Shake...

I had the opportunity to participate with some friends in making a Harlem Shake video this weekend. (I'll post a video as soon as it gets put on YouTube.) I'll have to admit it was a blast. But what I'm trying to figure out is why this trend has become so popular in the first place. I've now seen probably at least a dozen videos. Maybe two made me laugh. Maybe. My question:

I understand completely why people make these vids (due to aforementioned blastness), but why do people watch them? Here's how it usually happens for me: [Sees reference to Harlem Shake somewhere.] "Maybe I should give this another try..." [Starts to watch a video.]

...And there's a precious few minutes of my life I'm never getting back. If someone could explain to me the appeal of watching them, that'd be great.

Top 10 Movies I'm Looking Forward to in 2013 - Thor: The Dark World

SIX - Thor: The Dark World

How I feel about Thor: This movie, I like it! ANOTHER!

Seriously, after this, not to mention his awesomeness in Avengers, how can you NOT look forward to the next movie? Plus it's gonna be awesome to see Loki get his comeuppance. (Anyone else think of a certain line from The Mummy every time they hear that word?)

14 March 2013

As I've mentioned in a previous post, the archenemy of Captain Z is the dreaded Dr. Procrastination!

So I just finished a research paper that's due tomorrow. I'm actually quite proud of myself. Usually I don't finish such things until like 3 or 4 in the morning before its due. However, I still think this qualifies for a fail: I've known about this paper since the beginning of the semester and I just started YESTERDAY. No research, no quality thinking about what I wanted to do, heck, I barely even looked at the requirements until yesterday. The thing is, I have a horrible tendency of doing this with virtually every assignment ever (as well as studying for tests). And every single time my thoughts go something like this: Crap crap crap crap crap crap crap!!! Why did I wait this long to start this? I'm never never never never going to do this again! [insert tons of stress and staying uΓΌber-late]. The next day I'm a zombie through of all of my classes, and if I'm lucky I'll go home and crash for a few hours. Then I'll get up and think of all the projects and studying I should be doing, and then I think, "eh, I'll worry about it later." And then when I get the project or test back with a good grade, I think "See? That wasn't so bad." And then my desire to not procrastinate will plummet. Until of course hours before the next project or test is due. Then I repeat this cycle all over again. What I want to know is WHY do I do this to myself?

Anywhoo. That's my rant for now.

Top 10 Movies I'm Looking Forward to in 2013: After Earth

Well, it's after midnight, and I'm still up and about. Might as well get a head start and make my Tuesday post:

SEVEN: After Earth

I have to admit that I'm a Shyamalan fan. I've heard that his Airbender film sucked. (I still haven't seen it.) And I realize that his recent movies haven't been as awesome as his earlier ones. (Signs is still one of my all-time favorite movies. And if you don't like Unbreakable, then there is something wrong with you.) But I still believe that he can redeem himself. And what better way to do it than casting by Will Smith? Never mind that this title makes it sound like it is a remake of an awesome 90s animated film, Will and Jaden Smith plus outer space plus apocalypse plus Shyamalan plus what looks like Avatar-like graphics plus cool quote in the trailer (which is partially included in the new poster) should hopefully equal awesome movie. I really hope this one turns out. Please Shyamalan, be good again!

Here is the trailer:
