She Is Not Dead, but Sleepeth (Hopefully)

So, my computer crashed today. Über-sad day. :( I upgraded it to Windows 8 on Thursday. I was actually a fan of Windows 8 ... until it crashed my computer. Apparently after doing some research online, that is a problem that some people have run into: crashing a few days after upgrading. Wish I would've known that before I upgraded. Anywhoo, I'm *HOPING* to have my computer up and running again in a few days, but until then, I'm not going to have normal computer access, and I really don't feel like using my tablet and/or phone to blog (too much to type on small touch screen keys), so this will be down for a few days. With luck, I may be able to post again on Friday or Monday. Until then, I'm temporarily signing off.

Top 10 Movies I'm Looking Forward to in 2013: Man of Steel

EIGHT: Man of Steel

I am definitely a die-hard Marvel fan, but I have respect for DC characters as well. Top on my list of DC respect is Superman. Not only is he the original superhero (if you are a fan of ANY superhero, you owe gratitude to Superman for that character's mere existence), he is a moral model for many people, heroes and "citizens" alike. Some may make fun of the fact that he is the "Big Blue Boy Scout" (and the fact that no one seems to recognize Clark when he's not wearing glasses), but in a period of moral uncertainty, I appreciate a hero who is willing to stand up as a symbol for what is right and wrong. (Which is part of why I love Captain America over in the Marvel Universe.)

So, aside from the fact that he is my favorite DC character, is there any other reasons that I'm looking forward to this movie?

Perhaps this awesome trailer:

Or even this interesting bit of news?

Anywhoo, after the well-deserved success of the Dark Knight trilogy, I'm anxious to see where this studio takes the defender of truth, justice, and the American way.

Men and Chocolate

So, since it's St. Valentine's Day, I thought I'd have a semi-themed post:

I'm taking this course at my university called "Men and Masculinities," and one of the big themes is what is considered masculine behavior vs. what is considered feminine behavior, and overcoming stereotypes, etc. Anywhoo, one thing that I was just wondering right now: why is the love of chocolate considered a feminine thing in our society? Is there something unmanly about liking chocolate? Cause if there is, I don't care: I will be the first to raise my hand a say that I love chocolate. Offer me chocolate or any other candy that does not involve chocolate, and I will choose the chocolate nine times out of ten. Whether it's in candy bars, on my ice cream, or a steaming cup of hot cocoa, I love chocolate. I've told people on several occasions, "I love chocolate more than most women that I know." I've even joked about starting a Facebook group with exactly that title. So, if that makes me unmanly, so be it. But I ask again: when and why did we decide that the love of chocolate was a trait that should belong to women?

While you all ponder that, I'm off to get me a Reese's...

Top 10 Movies I'm Looking forward to in 2013: The Wolverine

NINE - The Wolverine

Here's just a few reasons to be excited about this movie. - First, and most obvious, it's about Wolverine, by far the X-Men's most popular member, and this looks like it could be a lot better than his previous movie because of two reasons: Japan and the fact that it is post-Last Stand. Who doesn't want to see Logan learn how to be a samurai? Also, this is the first X-movie to take place AFTER X-Men 3. I, for one, am very curious to see what has become of the shattered world of mutants that we were left with after the events of Last Stand.

The Wolverine is scheduled to hit theatres 26 Jul 2013.

Housekeeping, Failure, and Birthdays! (Oh my!)

First off, a little bit of "housekeeping" - in the off chance that I actually have daily readers yet (hello, all two of you), in case you were wondering about posts yesterday and Saturday, I spontaneously decided on Saturday that this will be a Monday - Friday blog, with perhaps an occasional post on weekends when necessary. This was in part decided due to the fact that it was 11:45 PM on Saturday when I was at a friend's birthday party, and I realized that I had not yet made a post that day. Oops. Plus, I'm usually pretty busy on Sundays.

Second, as you may be noticing, this post is already longer than 100 words. I've decided that, for me anyway, 100 words is generally too short to express exactly what I want to say without sounding like I'm being too short on purpose, or even sounding like I'm not fully putting thought into what I post. So, essentially, I was trying to create a blog that allowed me another medium to express myself, but I was establishing rules that would not let me express myself. So, since this blog is still quite "young," I figured the best time to change it would be now. Sorry for those of you who prefer shorter reads. Maybe you'll have more fun on Twitter.

Anywhoo, my random thought for today: I was recently discussing the over-marketing (if that works as a term?) of pretty much every holiday with a friend of mine. The discussion went something like this: we mentioned how gyms were capitalizing on the fact that virtually everyone adds diet and/or exercise to their New Year's Resolutions, and, as a result of this, they offer ridiculously low prices to join and get you to sign a one year contract. Then I "tangented" (if you don't know what I mean, you see me do it enough to figure it out pretty quickly) to this: what if, instead of New Year's Resolutions, we made birthday resolutions? I mean, what exactly is it about a New Year that makes you want to set new goals? I usually tend to be a lot more reflective about my life on my birthday, not January 1st. Your birthday is when you are literally entering the next year of your life.

Also, New Year's goals are all made around the same time, and they are all broken around the same time. So when we stop living up to them, so are all of our friends, so we justify it. Now, imagine if instead of asking, "what are your New Year's Resolutions?" (which you really only think about once a year, and then usually forget within a few weeks), you asked "What are your birthday resolutions?" Every time you have a friend/family member with a birthday coming up, you'd ask them about them, and you would also, most likely think back to your own goals.

So this year, on my birthday (which happens to be today, which is why this is on my mind again), I'm going to be setting birthday goals (I didn't set any in January.) Will it help me to remember them more? Maybe. But especially so if I get other people to join me, so that we can ask each as our birthdays approach what our goals are.

So who wants to join me? Anyone else want to commit to set some goals as their birthdays approach?

In the mean time, I'll get to brain storming...

(Oh, btw, my countdown of 10 movies I want to see this year will continue on WEDNESDAY.)

Top 10 Movies I'm Looking Forward to in 2013: Catching Fire

Over the next few days, I will count down the top 10 movies I'm looking forward to in 2013.

Yes, the series is incredibly depressing, but is also incredibly addicting. I read Catching Fire in two sittings. (I was able to tackle Hunger Games and Mockingjay each in one sitting, but unfortunately I started nodding off around 1:30 AM with Catching Fire.) The first movie actually enhanced my appreciation for the book. Largely because Caesar Flickerman is awesome. Stanley Tucci needs to host the Oscars. As Caesar Flickerman. Also, I want Seneca's beard.

Who Is the Man Behind the (proverbial) Mask?

I was born in southern California, but I moved to Kansas at a young age. I LOVE MY HOMETOWN. I'm a 20-something college student at a major university in Kansas, studying psychology with the intent to become a marriage and family therapist. I love and read various Marvel comic books. I'm probably the world's biggest fan of the Ender's Game book series. I'm a movie-aholic. I'm addicted to music. I would play Settlers of Catan everyday if I could. I waste too much time on the internet. I work at a national electronics retail store. And I'm a Mormon

The Secret Origin of This Blog!

Those who know me personally know that my manner of speech (and writing) is filled with much verbosity and superfluity. During the summer of 2012, I came up with the idea of creating a blog for movie reviews, where each review would be 100 words or less as an experiment to see if I could overcome my wordiness. The more I thought about it, the more I realized it would be just as interesting (and more consistent) as a daily blog about random things, with each post of 100 words or less.

The Secret Origin of Captain Z!

“Captain Z” was a nickname that a friend of mine gave me back in high school. It only lasted for a few weeks before it died, though I always found it funny, and I wish it would've stuck. I've used it a few times since high school (such as when I signed my name on the hidden giant wall of employee signatures at the movie theatre where I used to work – you'll hear plenty of stories about that job in the future, I'm sure), but I've decided that this blog is the perfect opportunity to revive the name.

Look! Up in the Sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! No - IT'S A BLOG!

I've had the idea for this blog bouncing around in my head since last summer, but I kept putting off its creation because I didn't think I had time to maintain a blog. But, a good friend of mine, who is potentially busier than I am, just created a blog, so I said, “If she can do it, so can I!” So now, you have this DAILY BLOG of random thoughts/opinions/epiphanies/whatever from the mind of CAPTAIN Z – NERD EXTRAORDINAIRE! Check back daily for a 100 word or less post! Tomorrow: the secret origin of Captain Z!
